Dayton, Ohio – June 4, 2025 — On May 22, 2025, SMART 24 Dayton Area held its first Heritage Fund Recognition event in the SMART 24 training room, marking the last day of apprenticeship school before the JATC’s summer break. Attended by apprentices, JATC instructors, union leadership, and Sheet Metal & Roofing Contractors Association (SMRCA) members, the celebration recognized brothers Dale and Gaile Kanak for their outstanding generosity and dedication to the union and its membership.
Third-generation sheet metal workers, Dale and Gaile Kanak have built a reputation for exemplary work ethic and unwavering support of both the union and its apprentices. In recognition of their lifelong commitment, the brothers received the Heritage Award—handcrafted eagle sculptures forged from sheet metal by David Cox of Budde Sheet Metal Works. These symbolic awards were presented on behalf of SMART 24, the entire union membership, SMRCA, and the region’s contractors.
The Kanak brothers grew up immersed in the trade, earning respect from employers, colleagues, and apprentices alike. Their contributions to SMRCA projects, outreach programs, and apprenticeship mentorship have significantly strengthened the local sheet metal community. Although they are inaugural recipients, Dale and Gaile have set a high bar for future honorees.
On behalf of the Sheet Metal & Roofing Contractors Association of the Miami Valley, Ohio, SMRCA contractors extend their congratulations to Dale and Gaile Kanak for their well-deserved Heritage Awards and salute their exceptional contributions to the industry.
